TONY Blair today failed to reassure hundreds of specialist MS nurses up and down the country whose jobs are currently at risk. During a heated PMQ exchange, David Cameron grilled the Prime Minister on the looming redundancy threats faced by specialist MS Nurses. Because of the current NHS deficits crisis, the MS Society believes that up to a quarter of the 200 MS Nurses are facing an uncertain future. Jeremy Hunt, Shadow Minister for Disabled People, said: “The Prime Minister’s response does little to reassure the 85 000 people affected by MS that the threatened nurse posts are safe. For many people, these nurses provide a range of specialist services that are simply not available elsewhere, and the Government needs to do more to ensure that funding decisions are not made at the expense of those who benefit most.”Despite the MS Society investing more than £4m to ensure that the invaluable support these nurses provide is available, the Government seems to be doing little to resolve this uncertainty.Mr Cameron commented during PMQs that not only do these nurses provide a vital service to people affected by MS, but the support provided by each nurse actually saves the health service around £64 000 per year.
