Jeremy Hunt (Member of Parliament for South West Surrey) and Anne Milton (Member of Parliament for Guildford) have asked Surrey Primary Care Trust (PCT) to come clean about Accident and Emergency figures used selectively to imply less people need to use A&E services. The Strategic Health Authority has used a study by Professor Matthew Cooke (Professor of Emergency Medicine at Warwick University) to state that 80% of people who use A&E do so unnecessarily. However, in a private e-mail sent last May to Simon Williams of Surrey and Sussex Strategic Health Authority, Professor Cooke complains that the Health bosses are misquoting his research, his actual figures state that between 6 and 80% of patients attending A&E might not need to.Anne said: “The public’s confidence in the SHA and PCT is at an all time low and this reduces trust even further. Selective and misquoting of research so they can push through their plans is not going to work!”Jeremy said: “Decisions on the future of our hospitals must be made using accurate information. Manipulating facts to fit the PCT’s desired outcome shows a clear lack of clinical evidence for any change and once again erodes confidence in the whole process.”
