Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt has turned down an invite to meet with South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt and Guildford MP Anne Milton at the Royal Surrey County Hospital to discuss the future of the hospital. The two MPs had hoped to talk to Ms Hewitt because Labour’s mismanagement of the health service is putting hospitals like the Royal Surrey at risk of cutbacks and closures. However, their invitation was met with the reply that the Health Secretary was too busy to fit in such a meeting.Jeremy said:“I asked Patricia Hewitt about Royal Surrey's maternity services last week and was fobbed off. Unfortunately this slap in the face is all too predictable. Why can't Ministers actually take the trouble to listen to the worries of people on the ground rather than retreating to the ivory tower of endless management consultancy reports?”Anne said:“I am very disappointed that the Secretary of State cannot find time in her diary to see the fantastic care and treatment available at the Royal Surrey. She would then know why the campaign to save the Royal Surrey Hospital has such momentum. Staff have worked hard to achieve such excellent results and it would have been an opportunity to thank them!”
