At a packed public meeting on Thursday 3rd February in Church House, local campaigner and Farnham resident Jeremy Hunt demanded that Farnham withdrew from the Western Corridor and Blackwater Valley ""sub-region"". The demand came after publication of the South East Plan, which Jeremy believes could have devastating consequences for Farnham.Jeremy commented:""This plan talks about increasing housing targets by 10%, 20% or 40% when we should be decreasing them. Building houses to solve the affordable housing problem is like building new motorways to deal with more traffic - a drop in the ocean. But the environmental consequences will seriously impact on the character of our market towns."" Jeremy is particularly concerned about comments on page 233 of the report which suggest that new housing in the Western Corridor and Blackwater Valley Sub-Region, of which Farnham is part, will be concentrated in our area. This is because of the large amounts of surplus military land in the area. The meeting, which was attended by over 60 representatives from residents associations and Farnham and Waverley Borough Council, heard Jeremy's view that Farnham should bit the bullet and actively campaign to be removed from the ""sub-region"" to try to avoid some of these consequences.Jeremy told the meeting:“We are now part of a European inspired ""sub-region"" which goes up to the borders of Swindon, includes Reading and Slough, but does not include Godalming or Guildford. It's time for Farnham to remove itself from a region that will see high housebuilding, and attach itself to areas with which we have much more in common.""MEP Daniel Hannan also attended the meeting. He told the meeting that the flaws in the South East Plan were not just about Europe, but about a wider debate as to whether power should reside with unelected quangos or be pushed down to the lowest levels.
