South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt is urging people to vote for the Watts Gallery as the BBC Restoration Village competition reaches it final stages. The Compton-based gallery, which houses a vast array of art, is one of just a few projects to have made it to the final in the BBC series.Jeremy said: “The Watts Gallery really is a gem in the heart of Surrey and truly deserves to win. The gallery is in desperate need of a new roof which will cost nearly £2 million. To win Restoration Village really would be the lifeline which the Watts Gallery needs. I would urge everyone to get involved and get voting.”The message, ‘Vote for Watts Gallery,’ has been resonating around South West Surrey for many weeks. However the calls have got louder as the final of BBC2 programme approaches on Sunday 17 September at 9pm. The Watts Gallery’s beautiful Arts & Crafts building and the treasures of its art collection are at risk. Throughout the winter and during summer showers, rain pours in because of the rapidly deteriorating roof. A new roof will cost the gallery millions of pounds. However the BBC Restoration Villages is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to save it. The Gallery won the South East round of the series that aims to save Britain’s built heritage and is now pitted against seven other buildings from all over the UK. To vote for the Watts Gallery, you can telephone 09013 600501. Calls from a BT landline will cost £1. Calls from mobiles and other networks may vary. More than 77p from every call will be donated to The Restoration Fund, a registered charity (charity no. 1098895). Voting lines open from 00.01am Friday 15 September to 10.07pm Sunday 17 SeptemberDirector of Watts Gallery, Perdita Hunt said: ""We are thrilled to be through to the final of BBC Restoration Village. We are there because of the dedication of our fantastic volunteers and in this final push to win they are being magnificent. ""Just by being featured on the programme has increased our visitors five-fold, if we win the £2million we can make their experience of the gallery even better and ensure that it is still around in another 100 years. Please vote for Watts Gallery, a local treasure of national importance that houses an internationally significant art collection.
