Jeremy and Surrey’s other MPs have formed an action group to co-ordinate a cross-county campaign against Government proposals that endanger Surrey's Accident and Emergency Services. The county’s MPs met Shadow Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, in Westminster last week to plan steps to fight any withdrawal of acute services from Surrey Hospitals.Conservative leader David Cameron visited Surrey last week to see for himself the superb work NHS professionals are doing – work threatened by cuts to accident and emergency provision. Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act from the PCT confirm that the need to save money is driving the planned re-organisation and all Surrey’s MPs are united in opposing cuts to Ashford, St Peter’s, the Royal Surrey, Epsom, East Surrey or Frimley Park’s A and E services.A delegation representing all Surrey’s MPs has handed in an 8,000 signature petition to Patricia Hewitt, signed by residents who are currently served by Frimley Park and St Peter’s, protesting against any closures. The petition was co-ordinated with representatives of the campaign to save the Royal Surrey.Speaking after the meeting, South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt said: “I welcome the commitment by David Cameron and Andrew Lansley to make opposition to NHS cuts in Surrey a key priority. The number of signatures on this petition highlights just how strongly the people of Surrey feel about protecting the health services they depend on. It is disgraceful that the Government’s unfair healthcare funding formula means that people in Surrey get less money per person than other parts of the Country. I will continue to work alongside the other Surrey MPs to fight any NHS cuts in our County.”
