South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt and Guildford MP Anne Milton have written to Candy Morris, the Chief Executive of the South East Coast Strategic Health Authority, (SHA) demanding to know more about the so-called shortlist of hospitals which are likely to face the axe in the latest round of NHS cuts.It has been reported that the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford and St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey are the most likely to experience a ‘change in role’ in the future. Jeremy and Anne are now demanding an explanation as to how this view has been formed by health bosses.Jeremy said: “This is another indication of the farcical nature of NHS ‘consultations.’ We are promised a full and open process, and the next minute we hear that Royal Surrey is on a shortlist of two earmarked for total closure. This is a shocking slap in the face for all those who care about local health provision.”Anne said: “I am appalled that we are seeing reports in the local press ahead of any public consultation. People feel very cynical about consultation and articles appearing like this suggest that health bosses have made up their minds and give scant disregard to what the public say. I would urge everybody to mobilize across the community and across the political spectrum to fight as one.”
