South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt and Guildford MP Anne Milton have urged the Government to stop playing politics with patients’ lives. He wants healthcare decisions to be based on medical need and not media reaction. Documents recently obtained under the ‘Freedom of Information Act’ show that the Department of Health have created ‘Heat Maps’ predicting which hospital closures across the UK would attract the most media attention.Possible closures of the Royal Surrey County Hospital could be based on how much media attention such a closure could attract.Jeremy said he thinks it is disgraceful that the Government should value media spin above patients’ lives. He said: ""They are deciding which hospitals to close based on the reaction that might be made in the press rather than on the clinical impact on people’s health. This is a new low, even for a Government that is obsessed with spin, and it could end up costing lives.""Anne said: ""The Governments Heat Map shows just what a mess they are in. The truth is that they care more about media attention than people’s lives. I am truly appalled. However the Government better watch out. The people of Guildford are capable of making a great deal of noise and getting a great deal of media attention. The heat maps will get a lot hotter yet!""
