Plans to sell the Milford Hospital site are progressing at an alarming rate despite the fact that the future of the hospital still lies in the balance. The new Surrey-wide Primary Care Trust has not decided whether to proceed with implementing the closure of Milford. But it appears bids are already being submitted by developers who wish to build on the site if the closure finally gets passed.South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt believes it is totally unacceptable for the PCT to investigate selling the site prior to any binding decision over the hospital’s future being made.He said: ""Health bosses may be hoping that given the threat to Royal Surrey, we may all forget about Milford. If they believe this, they are quite wrong. ""Milford is a vital community facility and we have not lost our fight yet. It is quite unacceptable for developers to be sniffing around the site when the final decision to proceed with the implementation of the closure plans has not been made. I will be raising the matter with the new Surrey PCT and ask them to look into the matter immediately.""Crest Nicholson is one major developer who is currently putting together a bid to work with English Partnerships to develop the Milford Hospital site. In April 2006, Guildford and Waverley Primary Care Trust announced its decision to press ahead with ‘Option 1’. The approved proposal included the controversial closure of Milford Hospital with further beds being axed at Cranleigh. The PCT has since been replaced with a Surrey-wide authority which initially said it was postponing the implementation of Option 1 until the wider review of services is complete.
