Earlier today local MP Jeremy Hunt and Portsmouth North MP Sarah McCarthy Fry met with Roads Minister Stephen Ladyman to push for a decision on the A3 tunnel project at Hindhead. Whilst the Minister was not able to explicitly comment on either the Inspector's Report or his pending decision whilst he is in the process of advising the Secretary of State as any information he divulged could make the final decision subject to judicial review, Jeremy and Sarah elicited from him confirmation that:It is not a matter of policy that Regional Transport Boards should not allocate all their funding to one project as long at the proposal was strategic in outlook. The South East Region ""set a standard"" for other regions in the model way it had approached transport funding decisions and the Secretary of State would have to have a very good reason indeed for over-ruling its recommendations. The Minister also confirmed that he was planning to make a decision on the project by this in the Spring.Following the meeting, Jeremy commented:""The Minister was encouraging and clearly recognised how important the project is to the whole of the South East. I feel we are in the final furlong now and am keeping my fingers firmly crossed.""
