OVER 100 people took to the streets last Saturday (September 30th) to voice their opposition to the overdevelopment of South West Surrey.Jeremy Hunt MP was joined by Greg Clark MP during the events which took place in Godalming, Haslemere and Farnham.Jeremy wants to put pressure on Waverley and the Government to reassess their planning policy in order to curb overdevelopment while also going further to providing a greater degree of affordable housing.Jeremy said: “This really is an issue which people in our area are immensely concerned about. The character of Godalming, Haslemere and Farnham is being completely scarred by developers transforming people’s back gardens into large blocks of flats.“This sort of development is doing nothing to address the provision of affordable housing for our young people and key workers. We need Waverley to reassess its planning policy while also getting this Government to look again at its housing targets for the South East. “This is not a case of ‘nimby-ism’ – this is a case of protecting our area. If there is one nimby, then that is Ruth Kelly. She has objected to every major planning application in her constituency of Bolton West. My message to her is if it is not good enough for you Ruth, then it is not good enough for us either.”Greg Clark, whose Private Members Bill on garden grabbing is currently going through the House of Commons, also attended on Saturday.Greg said: ""I was very encouraged by the support of the people of Godalming, Haslemere and Farnham for my Private Member's Bill. The turnout at each of the marches showed how passionate local people are about safeguarding this beautiful part of Surrey. ""Jeremy Hunt is one of the sponsors of my Bill, and we will both be taking the fight to Parliament when the Bill comes up for debate on 20th October.""
