Three local by-elections were held on 15th September 2005 following the sad and untimely death of much loved local councillor Maureen Nyazai. Peter Martin, well-known local resident, won both the County Council seat of Godalming South, Witley and Milford and the Waverley Borough Council seat of Holloway. On learning of his victory Cllr. Peter Martin commented:“It was a tough campaign but we fought positively on local issues such as saving Milford Hospital from closure and protecting our local environment from over-development. I am very honoured to be given the trust of so many local residents, I will have a hard act to follow in Maureen Nyazai but I look forward to carrying on her good work.”23 year old Rebecca Leah of Godalming, became the youngest Councillor in the Borough, winning her first election with a resounding 62% of the vote cast. Her first Town Council meeting will be on Thursday 22nd September where she will be giving a voice to the young people in the town and campaigning for them to become more involved in local community issued.
