SOUTH West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt has received confirmation from the Highways Agency that the first phase of work on the construction of the A3 tunnel at Hindhead will start early next year. Clearance works to prepare the ground are set to begin in early January 2007 with construction itself to commence around Easter time. Initial tree clearing will focus on the Tyndall’s Wood and Boundless Copse areas.Jeremy said: “This is welcome news indeed. Now that the scheme has been approved it is vital that work begins on the tunnel as soon as possible so that it is completed in time for the Olympic Games in 2012. It is pleasing that after such a long wait for the tunnel no further delays have been experienced and things remain on schedule for a 2011 completion date.”“I will continue to work closely with those involved in the construction of the tunnel to ensure that this timetable does not slip. The residents of Hindhead and Haslemere have had to cope with one of the most congested roads in the country for far too long. Now that a solution is within reach it is important that it is delivered on time.”The Highways Agency has also confirmed that it will be running two ‘start of works’ exhibitions in January to showcase plans for the tunnel and provide residents with information on how construction will take place.
