THE Government has finally announced today that it has decided to press ahead with the A3 tunnel. The Department for Transport has announced that it will accept the inspector’s recommendations in favour of the published scheme. This is a fantastic victory for the people of South West Surrey who have been campaigning for the Hindhead scheme for many years.Local MP Jeremy Hunt, who played a key part in the campaign, said he was delighted with the news.He said: ""This is fantastic news for hundreds of thousands of commuters who get stuck daily in the nightmare of the A3 junction at Hindhead. ""But most of all it is good news for the long-suffering residents of Hindhead and Haslemere who have had to put up with the frustrations of coping with one of the country's worst traffic bottlenecks right on their doorstep.""We now need to see action and see this tunnel built. I will continue to campaign on this issue to ensure it is built in time for the 2012 London Olympics.""The Government announced that the scheme was likely to get the go-ahead earlier this year but said back then that the final decision was pending a further consultation over the increase in costs associated with the project,The consultation was completed in the summer and this final decision was announced by Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman on Friday October 27.
