At last Friday’s meeting of Surrey’s Local Committee in Waverley, councillors from all parties condemned the proposed closure of Milford Hospital and slammed the consultation document issued by the Guildford and Waverley Primary Care Trust as superficial, wrong-headed and damaging to Waverley residents. In the course of a long debate, councillor after councillor condemned the plans to re-provide rehabilitation facilities at Farnham Hospital and the Royal Surrey County Hospital at Guildford. The many passionate contributions concentrated on the permanent loss of a valued NHS site at Milford, the irrevocable disappearance of a centre of rehabilitation expertise at Milford, the difficulty that other sites would have in building up an equivalent centre of excellence elsewhere, and the strain that would be imposed on Farnham and Guildford. The committee decided to forward its strong concerns to the PCT, the Health Scrutiny Committee and Surrey’s Executive in the hope that the proposals could be withdrawn and re-thought.
