Following strong opposition by local residents to further car park charge rises in Waverley, Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Jeremy Hunt has called for Waverley to halt its latest plans to increase charges for the third time since the Liberal Democrats took control of Waverley in May 2003. Waverley last week announced plans to make significant increases to town centre parking, but Jeremy is concerned it is another revenue raising move “by the back door”.""The Liberal Democrats have now increased car park charges three times, to the immense frustration of people who have no public transport alternative to doing their shopping. This latest increase looks suspiciously like another back-door rise in charges. We need a proper car parking strategy, not aseries of botched rises that will damage town centre businesses and cost local shoppers yet more."" Waverley issued a press statement “Parking with Ease” on 15th December in which it attempted to justify further rises on the grounds of reducing congestion at the town centre car parks. Jeremy Hunt believes this is disingenuous and is calling on Waverley to develop a proper parking strategy. “Of course increasing the charges will deter people from using car parks, but what will the effect be on trade? If Waverley was really interested in regulating the use of car parks they would have made a corresponding reduction in the non-central car parks,” he added.
