Local MP Jeremy Hunt took 2 students from All Hallows School to parliament today to present a petition to Make Poverty History. The students, Lucy Myers and Matt Clifford, had gathered over 500 signatures and came with the Assistant Headteacher Adrian Laing. They presented the petition to International Development Secretary Hilary Benn in the House of Commons and discussed the strong support for eliminating poverty in Africa throughout the town. Local MP Jeremy Hunt, who has had a long-standing interest in African issues, spoke in the Africa Debate in the House of Commons last week (text below). He has also just been appointed to the International Development Select Committee where he will continue his campaign to fight the scourge of AIDS in Africa. He commented: ""It is highly unusual for a Secretary of State to receive a petition in person, and just shows how all parties are uniting to address the issue. As I said in the House of Commons, the hard work now begins. People will not forgive us politicians if the G8 summit doesn't translate in practical policies that actually save lives.""
