Haslemere Conservatives expressed huge disappointment with the decision by Surrey County Council to change evening and weekend cover at Haslemere Fire Station to an on-call fire crew. County Councillor Christine Stevens and Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Jeremy Hunt played a leading role in trying to prevent the change and have vowed to continue their campaign. They spoke at a rally opposing the changes outside County Hall and will be meeting Haslemere firefighter Ray Esher to plan the next steps in the campaign. “All local firefighters are deeply disappointed by this decision,” commented Ray. “We would like to thank Haslemere Conservatives and all the people of Haslemere for their support in this campaign. Working with Jeremy and Christine we will be doing everything possible to get this decision overturned.” As part of her campaign to protect the Fire Station, Christine has already succeeded in getting an amendment passed guaranteeing the future of the second “pump” or fire engine. She also got agreement that 6 fire prevention officers should be based at the station. “The Fire Station is vital for our community. With more road accidents and the new tunnel at Hindhead I will be fighting this decision and pressing for provision to be expanded,” said Christine.
