JEREMY LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO KEEP THE POST OFFICE IN GODALMING HIGH STREET

Jeremy is asking Royal Mail to carefully consider where they will relocate the post office in Godalming High Street. The current site inside Waterstones in the town is contracted until August. After that the shop does not want to retain the service and new premises will need to be found. However, Jeremy is keen to ensure these new premises are not somewhere out of town such as the soon to be enlarged Sainsbury’s store. No decisions have been made yet but an interested party is in negotiations with the Royal Mail to make a bid for the post office store and they are keen to hear from other interested parties.  Jeremy is launching a petition on his website http://www.jeremyhunt.org/godalmingpostoffice.aspx  to show support for the Post Office to remain on the High Street.

Jeremy says: “Local Post Offices were under severe threat a few years ago and we campaigned to protect them in South West Surrey. Just as all that becomes a distant memory we find ourselves faced with another battle in Godalming. Although no decision has been made about the new location it is important that we do not sit and wait for the Royal Mail to accept an offer from a site out of town. I am launching a campaign to ensure the Royal Mail make the right decision and seek new premises on the High Street.  You can show your support by signing the petition on my website to ‘Keep the Post Office on Godalming High Street”.

Surely the local council can see the impact that not having the Post Office in Godalming town centre will have on local businesses... I for one will have to look for an alternative office location if this valuable amenity disappears!!!

Having lost my most 'local' post office (ten minutes down a hill from where I live) a few years ago I would be strongly opposed to any attempt to move Godalming's Post Office out of the High Street to an out-of-town location.

Every English town and village needs a focal point - be it the village shop and/or the Post Office. Such places draw and hold communities together. A Post Office could easily replace one of the charity shops in Godalming (which can't be making much money) or, perhaps, Smith's, the stationers, could play a role. Half of Smith's could be given over to a Royal Mail Post Office. Smith's don't seem that busy. What we're looking for is a very permanent and secure location for a very important business that serves the community.

it is with disbelief that Waterstones don't seem to be concerned that the foot fall in the High St will fall, when this is the main concern from all the other traders ????

It is not a good idea for the postoffice to be moved out of town at all. It must be kept in Godalming. There are mant Elderly customers, as well as Disabled customers as well as young Mothers, with prams. So please post office remain in Godalming Hugh street and not out of town.

Jeremy Thanks for your mail regarding this issue. I was not aware of it...so your mails on these topics are always welcome. I will certainly be supporting your petition. We NEED the Post Office to remain in the High Street or very near vicinity! Regards Paul
