JEREMY MEETS LOCAL CAMPAIGNERS TO DISCUSS RUNFOLD ACTION

January 29th 2010: Jeremy meets local campaigners to discuss Runfold proposals

Local MP Jeremy Hunt was in Runfold on Friday to meet with local campaigners opposing the proposed composting site in the village.  Local residents and Councillors are opposing plans for a new composting facility at SITA’s waste management site in Runfold. There are concerns about the visual impact of the proposals on the surrounding area, how the quarry will affect the air quality through emissions, the increased noise from the quarry as the work is undertaken and HGV vehicles drive through the narrow roads, the impact on health through bio fuels and flies for example and also the increased HGV traffic that the quarry will result in.  At the meeting Jeremy heard first hand accounts of how the HGV vehicles and emissions from the site were of serious concern. Jeremy has vowed to write to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to outline the objections.  He has also promised to submit Parliamentary Questions on the matter and do anything that he can to support the campaigners in their fight against the plans.

Jeremy said: “Obviously composters are needed if we are to make society greener and more environmentally friendly.  However the proposals at Runfold if given the go ahead would see the construction of the largest invesel composter in Europe and one of the largest in the world.  This would be extremely unfair to local residents who have more than done their bit by putting up gracefully with the current landfill site. I am particularly concerned that although SITA promise the composter would only be there until 2021, in realisty it could end up being permanent. Given that it is likely to generate traffic of up to 170 HGVs a day this would have a massive impact on the local environment.”

I would like to add support to local campaigners opposing plans for a new composting facility at SITAs waste management site in Runfold. This area of Surrey has to date contributed enormously in waste management terms and it would be unjust for the area to undergo even more pollution as per their current proposals.
