January 2010: Support Local Policing Farnham
Following rumours that Farnham, Godalming and Haslemere Police Stations may close to save money; Jeremy has taken action to ensure that local policing is protected in local towns and villages. The plans involve the relocation of police stations to community centres in order to fund additional frontline police posts. Whilst Jeremy believes most people will welcome the additional police presence, he believes it is vital that police continue to be based locally and not out of Guildford. He is therefore launching a campaign to highlight the importance of locally-based policing and his concerns that basing police out of Guildford could mean a net reduction in the police presence in neighbouring towns.
Speaking about the campaign Jeremy said: “I have spoken with Chief Constable Mark Rowley about the plans and asked him for his assurance that all local towns will continue to have a police presence. Whilst I appreciate the public may not use police stations as much as previously, we would all be very concerned if any changes meant fewer police were based locally. Given that crime is inevitably higher in a city like Guildford, the danger for towns like Farnham is that resources get sucked away leading to an upsurge in rural crime. Surrey Police have done a great job in keeping crime low locally, but we want to keep it that way.”
